There so much to ask and want to know but it’s a bit like a first date- stay with me. You both want to make a good first impression, you want to listen, but also ask questions, you want to get to know them, see if their a good match for you. But there’s a nerves, tension and anxiety in the air and you’re not sure how that’s going to play out. The client and therapist are really not all that different in the first encounter, so really it’s just about getting back to basic of when you first meet someone.
As the client ask yourself- do we click? Do I feel respected? Do I feel comfortable?
See not too different to a first date!
It’s important to remember that a therapist is there to listen, provide empathy, respect and to be congruent.
So if you’re nervous just remember we’re probably feeling similar feelings too. A therapist just wants the client to have a safe space to be themselves and to be supported.
